Children's Classes

Children's Classes

The members of the Dundee Branch of the RSCDS are very keen to promote Scottish Country Dancing at all levels. With this in mind, we offer children's classes on Monday and on Thursday evenings - all taught by teachers who hold the teaching certificate of the RSCDS*. You can find details of these below.

* The RSCDS Teaching Certificate is awarded to individuals who have successfully completed a number of practical modules in the techniques for teaching Scottish Country Dancing. So you can be sure that class members will learn to dance the steps and formations in the orthodox style that has become universal throughout the world. Teachers make sure that they match the contents of each session to the experience of the dancers, with an emphasis on the enjoyment of the dances.

Aim: our main aim is to encourage the children's enjoyment of the social
activity that is Scottish Country Dancing.  At the same time, we teach the
steps and formations that are the building blocks of all Scottish country
dances. See the note below on the award of RSCDS Medals.

Structure of the Thursday class
The classes run between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm and there are four half-hour sections.  The class teacher will advise on the two sections that will be of most help to your son or daughter, based upon existing  experience. What we do in each half hour section is based on the curriculum of the first four grades of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's Medal Tests for Young Dancers. The children can opt to enter for the award of a medal  when they have gained the appropriate experience.

Group 1, for new dancers, is from 6:00 to 6:30 to 7:00 pm.

Group 2, for intermediate dancers, is from 6:30 to 7:00 to 7:30 pm

Groups 3 and 4, for more experienced dancers are from 7:00 to 7:30 to 8:00 pm.

New dancers should normally be 6 years old or above.

Please Note

In accordance with Child Protection Regulations and Risk Assessments, it is the policy of the Branch that all of the teachers of children's classes will be fully checked via Disclosure Scotland and that an adult will be present who holds a current First Aid certificate.
