 Devised by George Watt. The winning dance of the 2009 Branch Dance Devising Competition

1-8

1s and 3s lead down the middle and back, crossing to partner’s position on bar 8.

Stay facing out.

9-16

1s face 2s, 3s face 4s, for reels of 4 on the sides; 2s and 4s come in and up to

begin.

17-24

1s and 2s, 3s and 4s, set and rotate to 2-1-4-3.

25-32

1s, 4s and 3s dance 3-couple rights and lefts.

4th lady cross diagonally with 1st lady, while 3rd man crosses with 4th man.

1st lady & 4th man cross on the side; 4th lady & 3rd man cross on the side.

4th lady cross diagonally with 1st man; 3rd lady & 4th man cross diagonally.

4th lady and 3rd lady cross on the side; 1st man & 4th man cross on the side.

Finish 2-3-4-1, ready for new 1s and 3s to begin.

It’s Guid to Ken You  32 Jig

Round the room dance for couple facing couple, lady on the right of man

1-8             Join inner hand with partner set, give right hand to opposite dance, cross to meet a new couple

9-16         4 hands across, right, then left hands across

17-20     Ladies set twice to each other, advancing and retiring

21-24     Men repeat this

25-26     Ladies change places right hand

27-28     Men change places Left hand

29-32     Swing your partner.  End by facing in the original direction of the dance, facing a new partner.

21-24     1W + 2C and 1M + 3C left hands across.  1C end in second place on opposite side

25-27     1C set and turn ¾ riht hand to end side by side in the middle of the set facing opposite sides.

1M + 2C and 1W+3C dance left hands across.  1C finish in second place own sides to start again.

25-     “Corners Pass and Turn”: (1C dance RSh around 1cnr while 1cnrs turn BH and return to place as 1C pass RSh to face 2cnr ; repeat with2cnrs, 1C passing RSh to 2pl own side)

After the second repetition, the fourth couple should begin from fourth position, dancing up slightly as they pass right shoulder round each other –while– the first couple steps down. (derived from the original text)

1-                             1C cast off one, cross RH, cast round 3C and nearer hands joined dance up the middle to second place on opposite sides, finish in Centre facing up.  Second couple step up on bars 1-2.

9-                             1W LH across then RH across with 2+3M, while 1M dance RH, then LH across with 2+3W.

17-                         1C dance down, nearer hands joined, cross below 3C, cast round 3C into second place and turn RH once round to finish facing out in second place own side.

25-                         Reels of three on the sidelines; 1M right shoulder to 2M and 1W right shoulder to 3W to begin.  1C remain facing out ready to start again.

Note: The Memorial Edition of the Ormskirk Books says explicitly: “the couple moving UP makes the arch”. The alternative rule (4M makes the arch) should NEVER be taught or used; it has led to dangerous collisions (including loss of consciousness and hospital for concussion) on the 4th arch [21-22].
